I think that we would do better to focus on the positive ways to make changes in even the smallest way, than to dwell on all of the (overwhelming?) negativity we can find in life as we know it.
And you can start beating all that crap by teaching your kids to be themselves, and give them more options than most kids find on TV or at the mall.

Don't go blaming video technology for kids being overweight. It's the parents responsibility to teach their children respect, to be active, to be responsible, etc. There is nothing wrong with computers, video games, or ipods. They are forms of entertainment. Its when people don't care, and let their children do what they want without any discipline, thats how the worlds youth go bad. Television is a culprit for sending those signals about being perfect skinny sexy w/e its in the media, its up to people to decide that its wrong or if its ok. Parents need to make sure their little girls know that's not how a lady is supposed to be. I get your point though.

I think there is a negative and positive side to everything, and it depends on your view. Yes, there are negative aspects in society, but you can look at them in a positive way too. There are rap videos that are violent and drug promoting, but at least minorities are making music and are on television, which wasn't true 40 years ago. Blonde hair and blue eyes may have been the bar for measuring beauty at one time, but people are much more aware of the diversity of human beings and are seeing beauty in other people, such as Sandra Oh. It all depends on your outlook.

Yes, but civilization effects us in much deeper ways than that. Those are all serious concerns, but also think on our health. Think on our inability to become happy because of the constant quest for more and more wealth. Think about the guilt that certain people make you feel. There are a wide array of things that society causes either directly or indirectly.
A long long time ago humans gave up a simple and affluent lifestyle for the sake of hoarding worthless things and creating a more complicated lifestyle. What has it gotten us?

I'm not sure. Kids & video games is a wastebasket interpretation. What about adults glued to Glenn Beck & Nancy Grace? Too high on disposable entertainment to think for themselves. And it's those adults, who're capable of participating in the electoral process, that decide our fate.
This is truely remarkable, given that there is no other body of knowledge that we require our political leaders to master. Even a hair stylist must pass a lincensing exam before applying their trade in the United States. And yet, those given the power to make war & natiional policy; those who's decisions inevitably effect human life for generations, are not expected to know anything in particular, before starting to work.
They need only to be expert fund raisers, comport themselves well on television, and be indulgent of popular myths.

Of course.
I think everyone would be happier if there wasn't anyone telling us what to wear and how to act.
But at the same time, nobody wants to stand up to Society either, because then you would be 'exiled,'
for lack of a better word.

Garbage in, garbage out. No one can go influenced by media. Even the "adults only" crap effects adults in enormous ways by desensitizing our moral fiber. No longer is shacking up a shocking sin.. but a cultural norm.

Blame it on politics. Blame it on the mass media. Blame it on the desires of wicked hearts. When there is a demand, there is a supply. Lack of intelligence. Lack of wisdom. Lack of self awareness. Blame it all on these.
