Is being a groupie only used in a derrogatory or negative?

way in Hip Hop? Or is that in other genres. I've out grown HIp Hop and now I'm more into classical and R and B. So I don't quite understand the term.

It is ALWAYS meant as a woman who follows the band around, and makes herself sexually "available" to the band...

As far as I'm concerned, the term "groupie" was popularized by the classic rock bands of the 70's, and yes, they were basically fans of the band that were turned on by the music and followed the band around (usually after being invited to travel with the band) and yes, they did sleep with a band member when they wanted to. Usually a groupie would only sleep with one of the band members (some women like guitarists, others prefer drummers), but sometimes any band member or even a roadie would be fair game.

Groupies may get a lot of flak from normal folks, but among the band members, groupies are usually treated quite well, and even respected in rock circles. (my old band WISHED the groupies would notice us!) You hook up, have fun, then move on. No one gets hurt and everyone is happy, as long you're responsible about it.

In recent years, practically EVERY high profile job has groupies. Athletes, rock stars, fire fighters, professional wrestlers, police officers, and soldiers.

Usually, yes. But some people take it as a compliment. I know several people who enjoy the term.

ya..... it kinda means you have sex with the band or group.... not the best way to classify yourself or friends!
