I live in Los Angeles, and the TCP and Taxis are very dangerous drivers...is this universal?

Depending on which city you live in. In fast paced cities such as Los Angeles and New York where the lifestyle tends to be high stress, the driving is a bit scarier whereas more laid back cities will have more laid back drivers.

Additionally, let's not forget that taxi drivers are expected to get their passengers to their destinations in a timely manner, and the faster they move passengers out, the faster they'll get to their next customer.

No. LA and NY are probably the worst (but not even all NY taxis are that bad), and other major cities tend to be milder to varying degrees.

Once you're in smaller cities, its totally different.
