First of all, how old are you? When I first started eating out and paying on my own (about 17 years old), I had no idea what the protocol was when it came to tipping, so I always left a $5 bill (1994) with my tab. Most of the time that was generous. Then I got into the service industry and learned a WHOLE lot about tipping AND PEOPLE very quickly. When I started waiting tables/bartending I became a member of "Overtippers Anonymous", I had gained empathy for the service industry slave. The standard tip for a waiter / waitress / server, from those who at least have a clue, is 15% of the patron's tab (including liquor/wine/beer). When dining at a more upscale establishment (those with a respectable wine list and without 28 testosterone-overloaded plasma televisions sprinkled around the pool tables and exotic burger specials and "Kids Eat Free" adverts) the standard is 18%, but most leave 20% (that 2% makes a difference over the course of a month to a year). Consider this--when your cocktail takes a few moments longer to get to you after you've ordered it, the bartender may have his/her own customers to serve as well before preparing order. And when your appetizer / entree takes a bit longer than expected, there's also a restaurant of people the kitchen staff is trying to feed beside your party of whatever. Your server is not mixing the drinks, and the server is not cooking your food. A well trained server WILL/SHOULD apologize and give a proper and polite explanation for your extended wait. As far as spitting in food is concerned, I have never done it or worked with anyone who has done it (as far as I know) in my 14 years being a server, and I would immediately report anyone who would.
Oh, P.S. and By The Way, I chastise Oprah for her 1997 show on "What to Expect" as far as time expectancies at doctor's offices, salons, restaurants, and other places that require waiting rooms and reservations. People can only do so much for other people in a given amount of time (she put a BIG hurting on us for quite a few months). If we were ALL worth a billion, I guess we'd all get what we want. And that's all I have to say about that...

Some places like Australia it is considered an insult if you tip, but in most other places it is considered an insult if you don't. I have been a waitress for 8 years, and what I have found is that if you don't tip the quality of your service will go way down, waiters/waitresses will more than likely let you sit longer than others, make you wait longer for your food, not refill your beverages, etc, just because they know in the end there won't be anything on the table. I have never seen anyone spit in food if they do you need to call health inspector!!!!Thats gross.

well if you think they are stop going there and find a new place that you like and go there, maybe if you were smart enough to tip they would not have spit in your food in the first place you should always tip good if your server has gave you great service and not so great of a tip for less service and don't forget about the pizza guy he is alone with your food for a while and he remembers the great tips and the no tips so think before you leave a tip

Greetings! My wife and I frequently go out for meals. Typically, we tip 15-20%, because we know what they go through and also, being ECE teachers, we don't get paid as much and have to do very hard work. Bottom line is that we understand and sympathize with our servers.
However, if the food is crappy or the service is crappy, we leave a ten percent tip or less. It is never a good idea to leave a table without tipping , because that is actually a reflection of you , the consumer.
Just so you know, gratuities are automatically added in a tab with large numbers of people (like ten or more). My wife and I usually tip above and beyond that, especially if they stay caught up with us (keeping drinks refilled, making sure there is plenty for things for us to enjoy our meals. Take care.

My family has been in the food service industry for over 50 years. Do you realize what a waiter or waitress has to live on?..TIPS!..Most give good service..sometimes you get a brandnew waiter or waitress..it takes some people longer to learn than others..myself, I grew up in the industry and people always are amazed that I take them the appropriate condiments, straws, ect..you have to get to know your customers..never ever approach the man first, if he has a lady with him..that is always a big mistake that no one tells you about..Always, go to the woman and address her first..Believe me, if you are a woman and you approach her husband or boyfriend..you are automatically on her list..you don't want that.
As for spitting on food..If I ever saw anyone doing that..I would ca;; the health dept. immediately, after bringing it to the owners attention..
Keep in mind, that someplaces have only one waitress when someone else calls in sick..they are not bartenders, nor cooks..and there are people ahead of others..

You should never EVER tip big unless they give you good food and friendly, fast service. Just cause u have more money that don't mean you should automatically tip more.
If someone spits in your food, you should take them by the hair, and spit in their eye!!! Seriously!!!

Tipping should be based on performance, start with 15%, if they mess up, or are rude, then it goes down, even all the way to zero! If they do an EXCELLENT job, then it goes up.
