I recently put a Japanese paper lantern in my room, and now, every time I turn the light on, there are soft, dull, thudding/tapping/knocking noises. The taps come at irregular times, and don't always sound the same. The sounds also come when the light is off, but most of the time, they come when the light's on.
I've decided that it can't be somebody outside, because the taps have come in broad daylight, when one of my parents was outside. Besides that, the tapping sounds seem to be coming from the ceiling, or the lantern.
I'm curious to know what the sounds are.

It is the expansion and contraction of the paper used to make the lantern. This is due to the heating when it is on and the cooling when it is turned off.

I would guess you have a fire hazard there. The lantern is an conversation piece and not meant to be used. It's expanding with the heat of the light and contracting as it cools, it probably does this while off also with changes in the room temperature.
I would not turn the light on at any times, due to fire.

Take the Japanese lantern out of your room and see if the noises go away completely.

Well, it is possible that heat from the light bulb could be heating up the materials of the lamp causing expansion when the light is on. After turning it off the materials returning to their normal state would cause sounds again. It's sort of like when your AC/Evap cooler come on and your home creaks from the pressure of the system being turned on and creaks from the release of pressure inside the home

its possible that the wire in the latern cord is bad. un plug it for a while and see if it stillmakes the sound or goes away. it goes away after you unplug it, dont use it until you can change the wire or take it back to where you got it.and try another one.

Maybe its a woodpecker pecking at your house.
Or the paper they used to make the lantern was that of someone gone a long time ago, and his/her spirit is trying to get out. oooooooooooo
