You might lend an ear to Kansas, America's twist on ELO. Both bands incorporated clever marriages of classical baroque chamber music with folk guitar and electric guitar snap-sassy rock and roll ambiance.
Kansas and ELO are alike--but also hugely different in their image, songwriting and sound. But I'm willing to bet you'll really enjoy Kansas' sounds.

You might like the Polyphonic Spree, more specifically songs from their latest album, "The Fragile Army." A lot of orchestral sound, and this album has more of a rock vibe whereas their previous two were more choral pop. It lacks a little of the classic rock sound, but it's an updated symphonic sound.

Apocalyptica (sp?)--they take some Metallica songs and play them with a twist of classical. I have no idea who ELO is, but given the name I think I've got a vague idea.

I hear traces of ELO (as well as Queen and Pink Floyd) in Muse's latest album BLACK HOLES AND REVELATIONS.
