The kitchen was an addition by a previous owner and not everything is square. I don't want to start cutting tiles.

I put in one inch squares tile and took up the differences in the square by adjusting the space in the grout, you can't tell the differences.

Just about anything you use will have to be cut. Ceramic tile is easy to put up. You can rent a tile saw at your local hardware store or equipment rental. Good luck whatever you decide.

How about a mosaic of broken tiles or broken dishes? They look fantastic and it can hide any imperfections in the straightness of corners and such.

If it is out of square, then your best bet is either broken tiles, or a random brick patern.

use glue backed, interlacing, flexible floor tiles... they cut with knife or scissors.
my dad did this on top of his kitchen table using mock parkey flooring and its been going strong for 20 years!

Try a piece of plexi-glass. You can cut it to any shape desired-it cleans up well, and can be decorated easily.
