First off: George Washington did NOT chop down a cherry tree. The fable had young Washington ‘fessing up to “barking” his father’s prized sapling.
However, the whole story is a moral lesson invented by the patriot’s first biographer – a former Anglican pastor and itinerant Bible salesman named Mason L. Weems.
There is no documentation for Weem’s charming tale of the cherry tree. He writes that he heard the story from “a distant relative close to the family.”
Close relatives asserted they had never heard the tale. Nonetheless, the alleged incident is in character with Washington’s childhood personality.

It's not proven that he actually cut down the cherry tree. It's just a story to teach little kids to be truthful.

From all the REAL history books I have read about President Washington and having visited his birthplace and more, the answer is: he didn't. It is a story invented (supposedly) by school teachers to show that George couldn't tell a lie.

Maybe he wanted to find out how old it was after having been told that the way to tell was by counting the rings in it's trunk.

He did no longer lie. He pronounced, "i won't manage to tell a lie, I minimize it down with my awl". Or so is going the asserting. What made you think of he lied? Now if it have been Lincoln, he would have spent eighty % of his time sprucing his awl and in common terms 20% of his time reducing the tree.
