I always love questions like this! :)

Here's my way of helping non-math focused people to understand how big a number is one million, one billion or one trillion. Just one letter difference between each of them, but such a difference in quantity!

Imagine that you have created a machine that can count one dollar every second.

1 second = one dollar
1 minute = 60 dollars
1 hour = 3600 dollars
1 day = 86,400 dollars
1 1/2 weeks = 1 million dollars
3 months = 8.25 million dollars

1 year = 32 million dollars
32 years = 1 billion dollars
32,000 years= 1 trillion dollars

Each of these is if the machine put down one dollar every second, and never changed it's pace.

The differences between one million, one billion and one trillion is pretty amazing, isn't it?

What's the national debt right now? ;)
