Post- World War Two liberalization of Japanese society led to some of the reasons for the imbalance. Women were no longer chattel. The practice of killing newborn females born during the Year of the Horse came to an end. In fact, the first free Parliamentary election wound up electing a very renowned prostitute to the Japanese Diet. As women became more plentiful in the work force, due to the high loss of males during the Pacific War, they also tied into better health care. Men, as they did in other societies, continued to indulge in unhealthful habits like smoking and drinking to excess. Even today a lot of big business deals are sealed in the ambience of "mizu shobai" (the water business). It's slang for the bar and entertainment districts.
The Japanes birth rate has also decreased over the years. This means less risk to females who give birth to many infants over the span of their fertile years.
Last, but not least, is the stress buildup in the male work force who toil long hours at the office, followed by extremely long commutes to and from work. Simply put, it's killing them off at a young age.

Well for the oldest it could just be due to deaths from ww2. But there is an age of folks who would have been too young to be in ww2 or even be alive during it who are older than 55.

Perhaps there is a large expatriation of japan males to other countries. Much hire than the same for females. Perhaps again ww2 led to a migration away from japan. Or fear of China as it grew as a communist superpower.

My guess is the reason is sociological not genetic or physical.
