I'm considering sending my daughter to Catholic elementary school. There are at least four close to where we live. What is the best way to compare those schools? Because they are private, they are not held to the same testing standards as public, and it is not as easy to rate the schools.

All Catholic schools have standardized testing even if it is a bit different from public schools.

Contact your diocesan office of Catholic schools and ask for the standardized test scores for the schools in your area.

I think sending your daughter to Catholic school is great. Catholic schools are perfect and neither are the kids. The teachers aren't even required to be state certified. Yet even with all that, from the start i think they taught us some good values and were very good educational wise.

All or most catholic schools do take some sort of standardized testing in the spring. If you really want another way to compare them visit the school during the day and see how well or badly the school is. Definitely try and talk to the paernts too, there not as bias as the principal would be for example.

You are unable to make a valid comparison of Catholic Schools. Such a comparison will not be possible until the Bishops agree to create a professional evaluation process in each state and then publish comparative results. Good luck that will never happen. Their group culture is based upon a feeling of superiority and what they would call privacy--- I have another name for it.

I went to both private and public and I have taught in both. If you choose private, check to see that it is accredited. I believe that most Catholic schools are. This means that they are held to the same standards as public school. The one regret that I have from private is that they don't have a lot of money for extracurricular activities.

I am a Catholic school teacher and have taught for the last 10 years in a Catholic school. Your daughter will receive an excellent education in a Catholic school environment. Observe at the three schools. Talk to the teachers at each school for the grade level your daughter will be in. Ask to look at the curriculum, look in the classrooms, ask what resource classes the school offers ( music, PE, art, a foreign language...), and also what extra curricular activities they offer. You will get a good feeling about one of them.
