It's a large flexible white piece (an inch?) that allows the screen to work properly. It's frustrating because although my laptop (COMPAQ) works properly, nothing is displayed on the screen.

I usually call it a Hinge. But, you may be talking about the video cable. If you include the model number of your Compaq It would be a lot easier to help you.

its called the hinge. but probably there is something wrong with the connection to the LCD.

maybe its the button that detects if the screen is closed or open. it could be stuck and that tells the computer to not initiate the screen
