The first 2 things I would check are the gear oil( or oil level if shared case) and the clutch adjustment.
Either of these could contribute to less than a smooth shift.

Sorry, it's time for transmission repair.
That's the first part of the transmission to go bad on all bikes.
The shift fork starts to ware making it difficult to make a positive shift from 1st to 2nd.
Shifting from 1st to neutral, then neutral to 2nd doesn't put as much of a strain on shifting .

hi, check your clutch adjustment at the handlebar, also if you are not using synthetic oil , you might try it sometimes this will help. also , make sure you are pulling up all the way into second to be sure. you may be on your way to needing a clutch, but try the other things first and NEVER USE AUTOMOTIVE OIL IN YOUR MOTORCYCLE. always use oil that is designed for your bike.

sonds like you just need new clutch springs ,cheap and easy fix , ask what options you have at your local stealership's parts counter , also I'd do this before the oil thing that was suggested as you will need to drain oil again after spring change.
