salt absorbs water killing the slug. try this, drown a fly, then cover it with salt. the fly will come back to life.

They don't really melt. The salt pulls the water out of them by osmosis, which causes them to shrivel up.

Oh please don't try this. It is very painful for slugs. They get completely dehydrated. A terrible way to die.
