Some of the books that I had to read were really good and others that I don't know why. Here are a couple:

The Lord of the Flies: This book is different to say the least. There is a lot of symbolism and good adventure.

A Farewell to Arms: can't go wrong with Hemingway. A great war and love story.

Anything by J.R.R. Tolkien: If she likes fantasy, start her with the Hobbit, if she hasn't read it yet.

Dracula: Great classic horror story! Forget the movies. The book is just chilling.

These are just a few off the top of my head. Hope you sister finds books that interest her!

The Scarlet Letter was always my favorite, although it's ridiculously wordy. I guess you can't really get away from that when it comes to high school literature. It's a good romantic and empowering book, but you just have to read it very slowly to see what's going on.

I liked A Separate Peace by John Knowles and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Along with everything else, I would also add the following:

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey
Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes

everything the others said was good. I'd just like to add 'Catcher in the Rye' and, since she likes horror/fantasy, anything by HG Wells or Edgar Allen Poe.
