I'm thinking of applying early to Kenyon in Gambier, Ohio.

My one concern: weather.
How cold is it really?!

I'm from NYC so I'm used to being somewhat cold...but how serious is it

In Kenyon the weather will be similar to NYC as they are on the same latitude approximately. Definately not any colder on average.

I think it's about the same as NYC really... like the one person said if you live up north closer to the Lake it gets reallly snowy during the winter. But as Gambier is closer to Columbus, I'd say the temperatures would be similar to NYC, but the snow probably isn't half as bad. For some reason it snows a lot less south of Mansfield (about an hour south of cleveland and about 45 mins north of Gambier) so it shouldn't be too bad down there... I've only visited Gambier in the summer and fall and at those times it was just like Cleveland weather... I say go for it and apply - all of my friends who've gone there LOVE it! Good luck!

It can get below freezing or 32 degrees in January and February, so it will get cold. In the summers it can get in the 90s, so it is quite a range. Whenever there is a transition into the new season, it can be quite a shock, and then gradually your body acclamates to it - somewhat at least. You'll need a full wardrobe in Cleveland - and layers are critical throughout most of the year. Tempratures can even vary throughout the day. Interesting thing about Cleveland is that the eastern suburbs get considerably more snow and make up the infamous "snow belt". The upper west side doesn't get nearly as much. It has to do with geography and the lake effect. So, it does make a big difference which suburb you live in - even if they are only 30 minutes a part. I grew up in the region and have learned to like the seasons. I think it makes you appreciate the environment more, and makes you adjust your leisure and recreation activities throughout the year. The weather may shock you, but I hope you come to enjoy living here. There are a lot of great things about Cleveland - the history, the culture, the quality of life, etc. It may be a midwest city on the north coast, but it has a very east coast culture. There is a lot to do that you can't get on the west coast, but you have to make the effort.

Sometimes its really hot and sometimes its really cold. I live by Akron ohio. So far this summer hasnt been too bad. Only about 3 days that were in the 90's, lots of 80's and many many comfy 70's. Sometimes at night it gets down to maybe 57ish and others it stays in the 70s. Some summers it rains all the time and others, like this one, we are all kind of praying for some rain to water the lawns and plants. We have cool summers or hot summers, or summers that change daily it seems like. Its always different and hard to tell. Weathermen suck at predicting. Winters are the same way. Its either freezing or feels like spring. Sometimes we get a white xmas, sometimes we dont. It can be snowing like a son of a gun burrying everything in its path in thick wet snow or it will just tease and barely give the ground a white tint...i wouldnt worry about it, you'll adjust

I am not sure about where Gambier is located, I doubt it is near Cleveland. The winters are colder in North East Ohio, because we are located right off the lake. I am thinking it is South of here, and in that case you'd have a better chance of having a mild winter. I doubt it's anything like the New England winters you're used to.

About the same weather as NYC. If you are close to Lake Erie, we get ridiculous snow in the winter. But I have no idea where Gambier is. If it is south of Columbus, the weather will be milder than it is in the Cleveland area and a lot less snow. Probably warmer than NYC.

personally I think that Ohio has some of the best weather... In the winter it can get pretty cold but as long as you bundle up you should be ok. The worst part about it being cold is when it snows and the roads get really bad. It is fun to play in but driving in it can get pretty dangerous... So does Ohio get cold yes but I cant imagine it being any worse then NYC

Ohio can get nasty cold in the winter, and it can last 4 months!
But Kenyon is far enough south that it doesn't get too much lake effect snow...

Honestly, in southern Ohio, it doesn't snow very often. Maybe once or twice a month. But if you live on the far north east side of the state you will get buried alive. But no colder than New York.

I think NY can be colder and I know for a fact that you get more snow than us. Come to Ohio. I love it here and I've been all over and I've come to the realization that Ohio is the whip!!
