Hey, try going to tigerdirect.com they have great barebone kits that will give you good ideas.
~dual core proccesor either AMD or Intel that clocks over 3.2Ghz
~atleast 2Gs of RAM
~512mb graphics card or more
SLi
~300G hard drive
if you have a nice motherboard then a sound card won't be neccesary
And make sure the case has a very good cooling system

my current build is.
asus p5ld2
P4 3.2@3.7ghz [9 months] and @4.0ghz gaming.
4x sata raid 0
4x 1024mb ddr2 667
xfi extreem music
xfx 7600gt
500watt ps
32in flat screen@720p
I would stay with xp pro and the 64bit vers. if you can. Vista is great with all the bling but actually runs slower than xp.

definitly
- 2 dvd drives
- lazor mouse
- saitek keyboard
- 2, one gig sticks of ram
-64 bit processor
- 400 gigs of hd space
- and dual graphics cards geforce 7800 and up
just make sure each component costs at least $300 and it sould be OK (the graphics card and processor should be your biggest expenses )

the main thing we need to know is are you looking for something out of the box or are you wanting to build something?
