7 games out is great news, relative to 2 weeks ago, and they must be taken seriously. Especially since they will be playing a soft part of the schedule in the next few weeks. But we can't ignore the flaws that the team has.

Mariano came in in the 8th tonight because the rest of the pen is not reliable. The offense ought to be able to hold up, barring injury, but the starting pitching is Wang and hope that Andy, Rocket and Mussina perform like they did in their primes and get offensive support, AND that Phillip Hughes can come back and really be as good as hw showed in his almost no-no.

Let's start by winning series and hope to be within 5 games by August 1. Let's not shoot the wad too early and get to late Sept dragging.

Still, it is a beautiful thing to see Red Sox lose when Yanks win.

FYI, next weekend, the 28-29, there will be very few Orioles fans at the series in Camden Yards while the Baltimore faithful go north to see Cal get inducted in the Hall of Fame. Should be a great opportunity for Yankee fans, and for the team.

What is it about the last couple days that have spurred the posting of these "questions" about the Yankees? There have been at least 3 or 4 in the last couple of days.

Before everyone else starts rethinking: remember that the Yankees are still farther out of first place than any other 2nd place team in the majors; while they could still make up the gap, it's still far to early to count them in as contenders.

Sorry, but with a pitching staff that old its not gonna happen. They might close within 5 games or so, but another injury to that shacky rotation will doom the Yanks this year. The only question is which of the ancient ones goes down first, Clemens, Pettite, or Musinna???

do you think there might be a problem if you are celebrating the fact that the Yanks are still 7 games out of first place?
