He's only about six inches long and we keep him in a 25 gallon tank set up for wet/dry environments.

He's healthy and active and clean after removing several legs and neck.

mine was about 3 inches long when we started putting feeder fish in with his regular diet of turtle pellets...it was so fun to feed him live food because he'd swim with the fish for like a week then one day he'd get hungry and all of a sudden *chomp* he'd chow down on his little fishie friend! :)
we also put live seaweed in the tank and he seemed to nibble on that once in a while

The best type of food for a snapping turtle is what it would eat in its natural environment. Any type of small fish such as feeder goldfish would do just fine and also bugs like mealworms or crickets would work as well. Basically anything it can easily fit into its mouth it will eat. You may want to cover any wire in the tank with pvc pipe or something of that nature to prevent the turtle from biting through the wire and getting zapped. Good Luck

I've kept baby and adult snappers, and they're not too picky about what they eat.

You can buy commercially made turtle foods in the reptile department on most pet stores (ReptoMin is a good brand to use), they can also eat commercially prepared fish foods and long as their primarily made of fish products (rather than grains). I've found they also like brine shrimp pellets, and frozen gammarus and brine shrimp, crickets, earthworms, frozen fish and seafood (from the supermarket), and live small crayfish.

(PS - I hope you only removed SOMETHING FROM his legs and neck, and not the legs and neck themselves!) ;)

My gilrfriend's uncle has a snapping turtle also, and from I can remember, he fed it some other fish. Since snapping turtles are omnivores, they eat things such as plants, other fish, reptiles, basically anything they can swallow. I hope this helps some!!
