It means that the mechanism that puts image to paper is running out of ink, toner, wax, ribbon, or whatever material it uses. Check your user manual.

A laser printer has an oblong toner cartridge usually acessed by lifting the top half of the printer up (some larger colour lasers have a rear entry method). It 'may' be worth removing the cartidge holding it absolutely level and gently shaking it side to side, you can usually get a few more pages out of it by doing that. Be aware that laser toner is a suspect carcinogen - most companies do not allow pregnant women to change toners for this reason. Wear the disposable gloves supplied with the new cartridge if you are concerned. Also it can be false economy with some HP Laserjets to use refilled / remanufactured cartridges, in fact some of the new cartridges are 'chipped' to ensure that this cannot happen. (Not all the parts are replaced, and they are seldom filled to the original capacity) There are places that will give you a few dollars for your old cartridge.

It means that the card reader on your toner cartridge is indicating that there is not much toner left and that the cartridge will need to be replaced.

Sometimes printers have an "override out" feature which will allow you to get more use out of your cartridge.
