Personally i never used mac, but in your case if your going to be a freshman in college or university you are legally entitled to getting a free or cheap copy of windows and Office from school.
Anyways if your going to go for a Mac, don't go for there low end computers. They are really expensive when it comes to low end computers and notebooks and really paying close to 1000 more for hardware just because it is a mac ain't worth it.
You can also look into buying a laptop preinstalled with Linux, there cheaper then windows and they have alot of development tools not to mind lots of developing going on. I do some programing and with the open source community it is very easy to practice and pick up more skill.
www.system76.com is a good store for that, you can also install Linux on a mac book.

I'm a computer science major and I would recommend Windows but also definitely get to know Linux. Most professors think of Macs as an afterthought.

Me being a Mac obsessor am telling you that you should get a Mac. It has a lot of processing power, great technology, and it looks very sleek and 'SHINY'.

If you want, when you install Windows you can remove all partitions (including the Mac) during the installation and only have Windows on there. It would be great if you have to install a bunch of Windows software.

I don't much about computer science, but I would think that having a computer on which you can install not one but two operating systems would be ideal, especially if those operating systems are as frequently used as windows and the various mac ones. And just as a side note, I have recently bought a mac and they can do some very cool things.

By the Mac if that's what you want. As far as programming for school, you'll be doing that in the labs which will probably be using PCs. I never used my own computer when I was doing assignments for school, so actually, it might do you some good to be familiar with both.

The best advice I can give you is that if you do get a MacBook and you want to run XP on it, get the fastest one with as much memory as your budget will allow. This will allow XP to run as smoothly as possible since XP is memory and processing hungry OS. (However, if your budget allows, I'd reccomend two laptops, one Mac and the other Windows based unless you enjoy switching between OSs all the time.)

except for the opperating system there is very little difference between mac and pc
(even though pc stands for personal computer and unless your going to share your mac with your roomate, a mac is also a personal computer). pc's have more options for upgrading so it all depends on the price.

My degree is in Comp science and unless you plan to work for Mac your best bet is to use a PC so that you will become very familiar with its functions.
