symbiosis.
each lichen contains a fungus and an alga.
the fungus extracts minerals and other nutrients from a wood or rock surface, while the alga produces carbohydrates from water, air and sunlight through photosynthesis.

Lichens are a mutualistic relationship between an alga and a fungus.

The alga carries on photosynthesis and provides food for both itself and the fungus.

The fungus holds moisture with its thread-like hyphae, providing the environment for the alga to grow. The fungus also secretes an acid that etches into the rock or other substrate so the lichen can hold on and not blow away or wash away. The lichen also absorbs some minerals from the surroundings.

it is a symbiotic relationship (symbiosis means living together)
this is an example of mutualism (i.e when both the organisms living together are benefited in the relationship)
