You can keep your phone number and move to any cell phone carrier. This is call porting your phone number. There are some steps that you need to be aware of before moving your phone number to another carrier.

First you need to determine if you have already completed your contract with your current cell phone company. If you have not completed your 2 year contract then you will have to pay the early termination fee once you decide to change cell phone carriers.

If you already completed your contract with your current cell phone provider then visit or call your new cell phone company Verizon and tell them that you want to port your phone number to their cell phone company. Do not in any way contact your previous cell phone company and tell them that you are terminating services from them. Verizon Wireless will port your number and will handle all issues. Verizon Wireless will contact your previous cell phone company and will cancel your account automatically once your phone number is moved to Verizon Wireless. It usually takes less than 24 hours before your phone number is activated into a cell phone by Verizon. There are no fees for moving your phone number to any cell phone company.

If you are just upgrading or changing equipment you keep your phone number. The only reason it would change is if you request a change of number or activate a brand new line.

Wow--- they type to much. I'm goign to answer your question and your question only. Yes, just ask the person at Verizon who is helping you when you buy your phone. Just ask them "Can I keep my number?" They'll let you.
