Holly is neither. It is an independent plant growing by itself. It is not parasitic nor does it hang off of other plants. It is an autotrophic organism.

Neither parasite nor epiphyte.

A parasite gets food by absorbing food from a living host. Holly is a type of shrub that makes its own food like any other shrub or bush. In fact I have two of them planted at the end of my front porch.

An epiphyte is a plant that lives up in the air supported by another kind of plant. Lots of these live on the branches of trees in the rainforest. Holly grows right in the ground like other shrubs.

I suspect that you are thinking of another Christmas holiday related plant, the mistletoe. Mistletoe is a green plant, but it is parasitic, taking food from its host as well as making some of its own food. Mistletoe can live on trees and other plants, sticking on the branches. So mistletoe is epiphytic, too.

Without even looking anything up, and not knowing what an epiphyte is, I know that holly has plenty of chlorophyl, so it is not purely or even substantially parasitic. Might not be parasitic at all. Just knowly that it is not purely parasitic would make me pick epiphytic.

It is not a parasite. You are thinking of mistletoe, another seasonal favorite, which is a parasite.

Holly is a large shrub with colorful berries and sharply pointed leaves.
