The following website has lots of interesting information. Takes a little looking around, check articles and questions.
He addresses both men and women.

"Each man is unique, of course, and his reactions to midlife crisis will be different from any other man's. Some experience a quiet withdrawal and introspection. Others exhibit drastic outward lifestyle changes.

Early indications are personality changes--unusual grumpiness and irritability or a feeling of insecurity. Often a man exhibits lifestyle changes, such as pursuing expensive hobbies or becoming preoccupied with his body. He may even trade in the old, family-style brown Buick for a nice, bright red Porsche!"

Actually.I think for women it is a blessing. They are at the point of * I have arrived*!! They have raised the children, they know *who they are *and are finally done with that pesky once a month crap! for women it is Freedom with a capital F.For men ..sadly it is a *oh my male macho crap is going down the tubes I have to stroke my ego*.Women shine in midlife..Men fall to the wayside because their egos are based on the superficial crap it always has been!! LOL!! No kidding ,men are vain and they lose it midlife ..hence the second trophy wife and it goes on and on.The car, the new clothes the hair implant.Men are always more vain than women. What men really dont like about mid life is the midlife wife who totally gets him and his games so he must run to a youngster who is newly impressed with his ego.Women rock after fifty..Men just really have a crisis!

Heck when you arent appealing to the opposite sex. A feeling of despair. For men balding unable to perform for the other half and having to take a pill. Hurting in joints and the list can go on. Midlife sucks ..In one word SUCKS. BUt at least you have the fortitude to get up and go forward with you life. Oh and hot flashes for the both sexes. That's a biggie to look forward to. As I said midlife sucks ..No more wishing I was younger just the fact that each day that midlife gets older(tearing up here) .. Just a fact of life each of us has to endure sooner or later.

bad, very bad...

you question almost everything and feel like crap. You might not be sure why you're hear, what are you supposed to be doing, who are you supposed to be with, etc. All the feelings come at once or one after the other and are strong. You often feel trapped and can't figure out what the best thing to do is. You feel like life is passing away fast, you miss what you've taken for granted and have now lost, or you regret for things you did or didn't do, etc. It's an awful place of depression and anxiety you can't shake...in fact, often a feeling of feeling out of control and doomed.

I hope this answers your question.

You may also do really stupid things if you panic. And you often feel alone like you're the only going through this and it won't change.

For guys, it's usually manifested by buying a red sports car and running off with an 18-year old Brazilian swimsuit model. But there are numerous variations on the theme.

Seriously, it usually centers on the guy realizing"Oh my god; I'm getting old! There is so much I haven't done! I feel I have missed out on things in life! I wonder if I can still attract a young lady, etc. etc. It usually causes all kinds of trouble for the wife.

It's like a severe dissatisfaction with one's life, job, house, car, spouse, etc., that effects a sudden change.

People who are going through a midlife crisis might change jobs, get married or divorced, have a late in life child, color their hair, or change their friends. But they usually just buy a fast red car.

I knew women who suddenly wanted to date men half their age again when men their own age had been fine for years. With men, I'm pretty sure it's the same, act like a child and date someone half your age. The problem is it might make you feel younger but it's like dying grey hair - everyone on the outside just sees it for what it is anyway.

I'm 26, so I haven't been there yet, but from what I have observed, men typically have to upgrade something in their life, like their car, boat, wife, etc. And women usually just find yonger men.
