Will an aspen tree limb live if it has been cut off and put in water???

Aspen are quite easy to propagate from hardwood cuttings. The best time of the year to take an Aspen hardwood cutting is late autumn to winter. Its a bit early right now, but you can always try.
Select a vigorous straight shoot (up to 6') from this season's growth. Cut straight across at the point where this shoot attaches to the limb. Remove the tip of the shoot. If the shoot tip is still soft, remove this part of the tip as well. Cut back to hard wood & remove any side branches.
Use a wooden rod and hammer to make a 3' deep hole in the ground where you would like this aspen to grow. Drop the trimmed shoot into the hole you created with the wooden rod. That's all you need to do with an Aspen.

Doubtful.
And by doubtful, I mean "no."
But it won't cost you anything to try. Do an experiment by cutting off different thicknesses of limbs and see if you can get any of them to root.

Cuttings root when treated with IBA=rooting hormone(buy it at lowes), but success may vary with timing; probably best in july-august.
