we shipped cargo last month and the compnay transfering to Emirates told us the cargo should reach Canada before you, within 4-5 days (this being about a week before we arrived in Canada)...3 weeks have pasted since and still no word on our cargo...The Cargo constisted of carpets, curtains, shoes, books and other items we wish we had when we arrived in Canada

Can we sue Emirates for the inconviences??? and if so for How much???

Hopefully you have not yet paid them for the shipment not yet received, and hopefully the contents were insured so that if they totally disappear, you get reimbursed the value.

Any time you ship something, you should be able to contact the shipper and ask them to trace the cargo, to find out where it is in transit & if it is stuck some place. It could be
* in customs because of some alleged import problem
* already picked up by someone doing identity theft on you
* got delivered by mistake to wrong address
* stolen while in transit
* lost in transit

You need to find out the official story and whether it was insured, by you or them, before you can sue.

ISuppose you insured it for a declared value of $ 10,000.00 Canadian dollars, you can perhaps collect up to $ 10,000.00 but no more ... If you now say it is worth $ 25,000.00 and you only insured $ 10 k because of the insurance premiums, your tough luck, you can only get up to the value that you declared.

You might get less. My employer has corporate HQ in one city and a factory in another city. We make out the paychecks at corporate HQ & then send them for like 250 people earning like $ 10.00 an hour each times 40-50 hours, with overtime ... so that's over $ 100,000.00 total money in a paycheck run, which is what the shipment is insured for ... well one time the Postal Service lost a batch of checks and they only wanted to pay us the value of the paper the checks were printed on, not the value of the $, our cost of doing stop payments, rerunning the payroll, etc.

Do you know why the shipment was delayed? It could be held up in customs at either end.

Contact the shipping company and demand answers.

Read your shipping agreement and see what your options are. Failure to deliver on time should be covered in it.
