I think it's pretty much true...as few others have stated "birds of the feather flock together" and "if you associate with thieves..."
Just my personal experience. while my friends are not all alike, I tend to hang around with people who have a lot of the same values, sense of humor, interests, etc. I have friends male and female, gay and straight, all ages and races. It doesn't matter to me who they are.

I have friends who are wonderful people. My friends aren't judged by me. My mom says things against my friends.
When some friends and I went out to a pizza parlor, a buddy rolled a cigarette, and smoked it. My brother told my mother he'd rolled a joint. She still believes it to this day.
My mom has issues with my marijuana use. I had meningitis and several strokes, I smoke pot to keep my left side from freaking out. Maybe two hits every other day or so. I'd rather be in pain than stupid, so I monitor my intake these days.
It drives me nuts when people judge me by my friends. Judge me for who I am, not my buddies.

Not alot anymore. For example (no offense intended at all) I know you are a very nice man but if I judged you on the basis of your friends list (which I don't) I would think very differently of you which would be wrong because you're you & not them

You can tell alot about a person about the company they keep. If you hang around pot-smokers, odds are you are too. If you hang around dudes who skateboard, you probably are a skater. If you hang around happy and joyous people, you're most likely going to be happy and joyous too.
Goes with the old saying, "If you lie down with dogs, you're going to get up with fleas."

Because society has this thing about "Birds of a feather, flock together", or "A man is known by the company he keeps"

"Bird of a feather flock together" I believe that you can and will be judged by your friends. Is it fair to lump you with them, no, but folks will. They don't understand that you are a friend, no matter what they've done...That's what a FRIEND is....

Quite a lot. People tend to hang out with those of similar values and beliefs

That's WRONG.
I don't believe it.
I've had EVERY type friend--So glad that my mom taught me that I am NO BETTER than ANYbody else.
Then I wouldn't have known my friends the way I do.

appearances can be deceiving.
how well we look into peoples' friendship patterns tell us more about us than the friends.
usually, scrutinizing the friends as an individual tells me why they keep the company they keep...and why they are also our friends.
