Let it go and move on. Regretting the past is just a waste of time and energy. Unfortunately, that is a lesson that we don't learn until much later in life.
You are correct. You won't get the time back, but you can live for today and for all your tomorrows.
We only experience guilt when we believe that we did something wrong. You didn't do anything wrong. You did what seemed like the right the thing to do at the time. Now you can you do something different.

It's the meaning behind the events, behind words, that really matter, because that is what we feel and experience. Whatever it was may have been a lie, but it effected you as if it was true. Simply understand that all things are illusory, they are never exactly as you think them to be as your own perception tags on extra beliefs about a "truth". The lie that held the perception static has vanished....just understand that all things are impermanent...they arise...persist, and then fall apart. Just let it go, whatever it was, and move on. Any dwelling is useless and only agonizes you. Forgive the pain it caused else you will resurface it in your mind again and again and again, effectively reliving it and giving it power over your happiness. Forgive it, let it go, and move on.

Firstly before you toss out Ideals and your conscience, take the time to heal your wounds and mollify your anger. When you have come to a point of peace with yourself then begin the reexamining process. If some how you have truly come to the conclusion that your ideals are flawed reexamine them and use the experience to set new ideals that you can agree with. Conscience and ideals are not useless! The pursuit of ones ideals helps us to move forward and our conscience can help us achieve those Ideals in a moral fashion. In you’re past beliefs there has to be something that is good. Salvage what is good and build from there. Let the past be the past, forgive those who have hurt you not because it helps them but because it is good for you and then move forward in good spirit.

By admitting your wrongdoings is the first step in correcting the problem. You cannot change what happened 5 minutes ago or 5 years ago. Although, by understanding yourself, you can make a change for the better. I don't know how old you are, but many people change as they get older. Do you know why? Because many people get wiser with age. For most, it's a natural thing. When we are young...we don't care as much and are willing to make all kinds of mistakes. But when you learn lessons from your mistakes, you become more experienced with life. Trust me, I know from all of the mistakes I have made.

Yeah, the past sucks, but if you realize you have control over what you did wrong then you also know you can make the future better. When you don't have full control then you'll know how life sucks. But anyway, try and make reparations and do better day by day. You may not be happy but at least you won't have the delusion that everything is okay. That's sort of my comfort.

I am soo there right now. I don't know. Go thru the motions? hope for the best. Through yourself to the lions? Crawl into the bush to lick your wounds? Crawl under a rock? craddle yourself? Get drunk? or what have you?
Tear down the walls and rebuild from scratch?
