Johnny Bench is one of the all-time greatest catchers to ever play in the major leagues. When he retired, he had the record for most home runs by a catcher (389). He hit 20 or more home runs 11 years in his career. Rookie of the Year in 1968. Played in 100 or more games for 13 straight seasons. Earned 10 Gold Glove awards at catcher. Named to the All-Star team 14 times. National League Player of the Year twice. Major League Player of the Year once. World Series MVP. World Series Champion.

I'm a Yankees fan...but you can't front on Johnny Bench. Best catcher of his era by a landslide.

Johnny was named to the NL All-Star team fourteen times, played in every game from 1968 to 1975, and hit .409 with 3 home runs. He set a major league record for home runs by a catcher (327 plus 62 playing elsewhere), later broken by Carlton Fisk; won two home run crowns; led the league in RBI three times; and was chosen MVP twice. He was also the first catcher to ever be named 'rookie of the year'.

One of the greatest hitting and defensive catchers to ever play the game. He, without question, had one of the best throwing arms of any catchers in the history of the game. Very few would ever try to run on him. And last but certainly not least, he was a key part of the Cincinnati Reds "Big Red Machine" in the 1970's that dominated MLB.

He went to the hall of fame mainly because of his defense. He didnt have impressive offensive numbers but his defensive helped him go into the hall of fame.
