roommate listings for la can be found at:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/
http://www.dailynews.com/
http://www.latimes.com/

you might want to cruise the websites of different schools in la also. many have bulletin boards online that students can post rooms that are available and post for rooms needed.

L.A. is a huge city; if they live in the wrong part of it, they can waste hours getting to and from class. If they aren't living on campus, they at least need to be nearby. They do need to contact their school; depending upon what part of town their school is in, the price point you mention may be really hard to find. Just looking at Craigslist's roommate wanted ad, I only found one ad out of the first hundred listed in that price range, and it wasn't in English.

I recommend contacting their college. Usually there is a student union building and students post their need for a roommate. Also, perhaps the college has dorms.

Best wishes.
