the best way to sell something is to find whats missing and how your product will fill in that gap. For example, your selling shovels. If you just go up to a customer and ask do you want to buy a shovel your most common answer will be no. However if you ask open ended questions like why do you think you might need this shovel the customer will revel there own need for the shovel and be more likely to buy one.

Convince them that they need it. Effective marketing relies on philosophy and psychology anyways.
Understanding the philosophy of who you plan to sell to makes all the difference in the world. Selling a widget to a Buddhist or a Catholic will have some similarities and some vast differences. Understanding their philosophy helps you to respond to them.

there is market and customer for anything no matter how silly it looks or how stupid it could be.
you just have to believe in your own product in order for others to buy.
selling is a matter of convincement whereas buying is the result of trust.

get a uke compose a tune and write a jingle about the product. works like a charm. oh and have hot ladies hold the product while your singing. i think that helps a little.

Tell them it's haunted and make up an elaborate ghost story or tell them that you saw the face of Jesus in it then sell it on Ebay for $60,000.

advertise and create desire. explaining what they are missing great pleasure comfort by not buying it
Also create jealousy and guilt if they are not buying and others are buying they are a creature on earth..
also create fear , if they do not use, what will happen..
