The Rolling Stones

If you consider The Beatles rock and roll, then I'd have to say there's no contest. They were the most influential band of the last 50 years. But if you want a truer rock sound, I'd vote for a band that only made one album, but which included some of the best rock musicians ever and a whole album of classic music: Blind Faith.

50% of the answers are always Led Zeppelin in these things. I think the early Who and Rolling Stones put's most of what Led Zeppelin did to shame. But these things are all taste so I guess that doesn't mean anything anyways lol. But I'm going to say the Stooges. I've mentioned them a lot in the last week, but damn they deserve it. They take the primal force that drives rock and refine it to a purity that hasn't been reached since. All three original albums are pure shining diamonds of greatness.

Honorable mention goes to the Clash, Wire and the Velvet Underground.

I would definitely say Led Zeppelin. They were innovative and creative, and all their musicians were talented. Page was an AMAZING guitarist, Plant wrote lyrics like no one else could, Bonzo was a kick-*** drummer, and John Paul Jones played awesome bass, plus mandolin and keyboards! They had a ton of variety in their music over the years, and kids are still listening to them and wearing Led Zeppelin t-shirts today. What other qualifications do you need?

If we take the Beatles out of this equation, as they are more of a musical phenomenon than anything else, then I think we have to go with The Rolling Stones, based mostly on their extensive discography. Led Zeppelin was just as good, as was the Who. The Stones produced more work, so a slight edge to them.

Love them all.

I'll always be partial to the Clash.

Others (besides the big three - Beatles, Who, Stones) who were major influences on bands that came after them would have to include:

Kinks
Velvet Underground
Led Zeppelin
Sex Pistols
Ramones
Stooges
New York Dolls
REM
Beach Boys (who, I personally hate)

The ones which are occasionally cited but have NO place on a list of rock greats include:

Guns 'N' Roses
Metallica
KISS
Rush
Yes

Who will be the next GREATEST ROCK BAND?

Metallica, They are ranked 7th in album sales of all music. they are the only band ever to have a specific time each day that their music is played on rock stations around the world (Mandatory Metallica) and often referred to as "Lord Tallica".
