Daaaaaaammmmmmmmmmm,
Man Mojo, now you got my eyebrow raised on that question. You just enlightened me because I never would have tought. but now that I do think of it, yea I would agree.
And unlike some of the other responses, no I have never seen a group of young white males reffered to as "thugs".
"Delinquents, even "misfits", but not thugs. Anytime we see a group of Black males its those thugs or gangsters! Yes we do know the word can actually apply to any person of any race but, when we often hear the word what race is the person that is being talked about most 98.9% of the time?
"Be honest now people, ................ yes he(or she, ask Don Imis, or whatever his name is) is BLACK"!
Good question Mojo, good question.

I have heard white people referred to as a thug, a thug is a thug no matter what race. But now days it is a popular word to use in almost a complimentary fashion, which is certainly wrong. I only hear the word in songs by African American musicians...Thug life, gotta be a thug to get with me, etc...I won't pretend to understand as I am a white dude.
But seriously have not witnessed or ever even thought about Thug as a substitute for that other word...but your experiences are surely different than mine.

A thug is just someone who gets into trouble alot. I have heard people in many different races be called a thug. Gangsters aren't the only people called thugs, some skaters are called thugs too (white and black).
B-NUT: When I hear someone say the word gangster, I think of someone who is in a gang. I don't think of any particular race. When I hear thug, I think of someone who gets into lots of trouble. I don't think of any particular race. I know lots of people who think the exact same way.
Once a police officer was watching a black guy and then he says it was because he is black. The black guy was wearing baggy clothes and looks like he is in a gang. Of course the police would look at him. Later on a group of black guys walk by and the police didn't pay attention to them. It is because they didn't look like gangsters and were wearing normal clothes. Police watch people, not because of race (although I am sure that some police officers are racist and do do this) but because they look suspicious. Police officers also watch white skater kids when they walk around because they might start skating and aren't suppose to.
Why is this in the football section?

The word thug can apply to anyone of any gender, sex, or race. I think you are looking for racism where there is none intended. Racism will only cease to be when we can use the english language to describe people without people applying hidden meanings that were never there

I've never noticed that in particular. When I hear the word 'thug' I don't automatically think of a white guy. In fact the word originally referred to a Chinese guy!
But in the US we often hide racism by using 'proxy' issues. During elections we talk about crime, drugs, unwed motherhood, welfare, 'inner city', etc.etc., and often people understand that these are only covers for talking about race.

honestly, i don't use the "n" word, but sadly, when i hear the word thug, i do think of a black person. sorry. only reason for that being is because it's used so much in hip-hop and rap music. being that this is posted in the football section, you must be refering to vick or pacman. they are not thugs, they're f'in idiots.

Where I grew up, as a kid you heard black or white kids saying the " N " word and the honky name. Most of the time if a black person was suppossedly bad or done something stupid, you heard both black and white people say the " N" word. Black people usually would say something like, " Stupid/ dumb *** honkey " towards a white person. Not sure about the thug word usage.
