Bats are highly beneficial. Each consumes around 30,000 insects each night. Would you rather have the insects?

Bat guano is not toxic, in fact, garderners pay quite a bit for it to use on exoctic plants they grow as fertilizer.

Build or buy bat houses and hang them on the outside of the house.

Being nocturnal, the bats will fly at dust searching for food. You should be able to enter the attic and seal up their entrance points with steel mesh wire. Prior to closing off the attic, check for female bats who may be nursing pups and not flying.

Unless they are sick, bats will not attack you. They may swoop down to try and scare you off, but they won't get tangled in your hair. If they are sick, they usually can be found on the ground and not flying. If this is the case, stay away as they are susceptible to rabies as well as distemper.

As Mark pointed out, they are beneficial to your yard by controlling insects, unless, of course, they are fruit bats.

It is best to get an exteminator to get rid of them as they will also clean up the guano in there. That in itself is a huge health hazard. It can cause lung problems such as asthma and allergies, blindness, brain sicknesses and a whole lot of other nasty things best left to the professionals.
