I'd like to apply for a job, but I have a really bad history with my given name. I'm not old enough to legally change it myself yet and my mother won't help me change it. Is it legal to just put a different first name, but still putting my real last name in.

I don't think a job application is a legal document. You can put "Mickey Mouse" on there if you want.

As long as you are not signing the application under penalties of perjury, then it's not criminal.

It is, however, fraud -- and grounds for being fired, as well as being sued by the company.
