Depending on exactly which bag you bought, you either have some dwarf lillies or some aponogeton bulbs. Either will be fine in your tank, but the cichlds will nibble at them all the time and they probably won't grow as well as they could otherwise. Allow it ( or them) to float for a few days until you see them begin to sprout. Them bury them in the gravel with the green part and just a little of the bulb showing.

I have planted the same bulbs. You will run into two problems, neither of which are an immidiate threat to your tank.
1) These plants are hard to grow. The bulbs are mostly duds. They are cheap for a reason, and getting them from Wal-mart, they are doubly so. Figure on 1 in 3 or 4 will actually sprout. The others tend to rot, esp. if planted in gravel. Let them float, and see which sprout. After you get some green, then bury it.
2) As others have pointed out, a cichlid tank (the breed that oscars and dempseys fall under) is not a stable environment for any plant. These fish will destroy your plants.
Look into big, decorative rock if you want to decorate the tank. It's more expensive, but you can build a decorative tank slowly, one piece at a time.
Good luck.

your cichlid will destroy that thing and don't get fish or fish supplies that are in wal mart water because its badly infected with tons of diseases i bought 2 cichlids there one time then a week later all my fish were dead from a disease that the cichlids carried in so i bought some more fish and decided to give wal mart another chance so i bought 2 more cichlids and then 2 weeks later my tank as infested with ich i spent over 20 dollars treating it because i bought 2 dollar fish

Chances are that they're not a tropical species in which case they will rot quickly and pollute the tank, having suffered this fate I'd hate for you to suffer the same thing, so keep smelling the tank, and checking to see if its growing if its growing then thats fine but the first wiff of something going off take it out.

I don't think they would hurt your fish but some cichlids like to dig and will constantly uproot plants. Some cichlids also find plants to be a tasty treat so I would be more concerned about the plants surviving than anything happening to your fish.

I think what you're talking about are these brown little balls you get to buy at walmart packaged in plastic, and it tells you just to trop it in your tank
No it's not harmful to your fish, I actually just one of them myself, unfortunately only one of them went to the ground started actually growing, the other one stayed on the surface so I had to take it out, it takes about 3-5 weeks before you may see any plant growth
Hope that helped
Good luckj

I would purchase something like that at a pet shop instead of walmarts. a pet shop can better advise you but salespeople at places like walmarts dont seem as educated in this area and dont always give the best advice.

Do the dozens of question marks and exclamation marks and spelling help with 3 l's and 6 p's serve ANY purpose whatsoever? Just wondering. This question is somewhat unintelligible due to poor grammar, spelling, and general vagueness. Something floating in your fish tank? Did your fish die? Proofread this and I might be able to help.
