I think a lot of women who own cars would like to have a female mechanic because "us women" have all experienced "rip offs" from the mostly male dominated field of auto mechanics.

My daughter took auto mechanics in High School and she did better in that class than any other class. The teacher said he wished all the kids were as interested in the class as she was. This is a girl who failed English II twice.
She loved the grease running down her arm when she was changing oil.
One day I came home and she was supposed to be having some girlfriends over and she was out in the garage changing theoil in her car. I asked her where her friends were and they were in the bathroom putting on their makeup. Well, she looked a lot better when she got cleaned up too.
For Christmas her dad gave her a chrome tail pipe extension and some air horns. She had them on by the end of the day.
She tried to get a job in auto but I don't really think she tried hard enough. Then instead of going to Jr. College to learn more she got married instead.
I think a girl really has to prove herself and almost fight for a job that has a majority of men.
You would probably have to open up your own auto shop.

Flat rate is not a way to go unless you know how to fix things fast it does not pay much......But hourly that is where the money is and not to mention the benefits......We had great coverage when my ex was a mechanic for a popular car dealership and yes they hired females too. I think it is great that there are female mechanic's sometimes women have a hard time trusting the male perspective even when it comes to the vehicles. Some dealerships send you to school to learn their products its a win win situation!

If you have the knowledge, do good work, and enjoy being a mechanic, then do it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see the difference between a male mechanic working an a car and a female mechanic working on a car.

I think it's a great career choice for women. I think they are often more meticulous than men and if I knew one I would take my car to her in a heartbeat.
In the military there are tons of women who work on the flightline on jets, weapons systems, even women crew chiefs as well as women in the motor pool.

I have a lady friend who is a motorcycle mechanic, and no one cared whether she is female, just that she is good at what she does.

As long as they know what they're doing, they're welcome to work on my car. As far as a career choice... If they enjoy the work, then I say go for it! A good career choice is choosing to do what you enjoy.

All I can think of is Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny as the character Mona Lisa Vito. I loved her character.
