This is an old tradition that goes way back to the music store days. All the major record labels also distributed and sold blank audio tape through the same channels as the records. Sony brand was popular for videotape, audio cassettes and CD blanks even though they also make movies and CDs. It is just smart marketing. The store is not your mother. It is your decision to be a thief or not. Choose wisely.

You may get a video camera & take pictures of family, put that on Internet, invote family in other cities to make copies ... in that case you have the right to make your copies, but you freely share that right with other people.

My sister composes her own christian music, plays it, makes it available for people in her church to use, sends copies to friends, puts on Internet & sends us the url, inviting us to make copies of her compositions.

Many artists do similar stuff ... make their music freely available to their friends.

Other artists contract with big publishers to sell the music movies etc. to make big profits. In this case the right to make copies stays with the publisher ... you may get ONE copy to do with as you please, which does not include making copy # TWO, whether copy # 2 is for your own private home purposes or for any other purposes.

It is like when you buy a book or magazine ... that is your ONE copy ... you may not run it through photocopy machine to have copy TWO. Or you buy a computer game, install it on your home computer, enjoy the game, give the stuff to a friend so they can also install on their home computer, then it goes to another fiend and now it is on computer number THREE. That is illegal copying ... only one person computer allowed to have the one game that got purchased.

You watch something on TV, arrange to time shift so you can watch it at a different time ... it is illegal to have other people watching it at their house. It is illegal to be passing around that copy of the movie that you copied off of the TV.

Stores sell discs for making LEGAL copies.
Many types of theoretical copies are legal and many types are illegal.
You are expected to know the difference.

Not all are copyrighted, and copyrights expire. Besides, what if you want to make your own? I do some experiments and video when can, and I wish I had a highspeed camera. I hope later to make a series of birds in flight videos. Might sell them, might not. See what I'm saying?

If you own it legally (by buying the CD or downloading it from a legal site) you can burn copies for your own use but not to distribute.

According to the law you can make a backup copy (only 1) as long is its a "backup" for your own use. As long as you ain't selling them or posting them on the internet, you'll be ok.

well,
to my opinion,
i believe that when you buy a disc from the store,
and burn it, its okay.
but if you burn it without paying or anything,
then i believe is illegal.
