The rules vary by state, but generally no more than 48 to 72 hours before they must be arraigned.

Arraignment is where they are formally charged, and is usually combined with a bail hearing.

If someone is not being formally charged, they must be released. They cannot be held indefinitely.

At least, not legally.

unless they bond out, or are released on their own recogninces, they will be held until their court date. usually prostitutes are sentenced to probation and fines, and don't do any actual time-or show up for their probation, or pay their fines. no one bothers to look for them because it's difficult to find a random street person.

if convicted here in Detroit it is 30 days to 90 days depending on the judge and their recorded.
