Would the offense be something on the level of lets say, petty shop lifting? Or is that something llike a slap on your hands like a driving violation?

Solicitation for prostitution is usually a misdemeanor -- on the level of petty theft or petty vandalism.

I don't know of any states that make it a felony (but I haven't researched them all). And it's usually more serious then just an administrative violation.

In quite a few cities, cops have been known to impound the vehicles of men cruising for hookers. It costs a pretty penny to get the car back.

In San Francisco, they have a John School where men get lectured at by former prostitutes and sundry nanny staters in lieu of jail time.

To answer your question, you'd probably be better off to be caught shoplifting a candy bar or blowing a red light in most places outside rural Nevada.

If you got caught, it'd go on your record.

It's somewhat petty, all things considered, but if you ever commit a crime with a minor, it will probably come back to haunt you.

As far as the pre-paid legal crap, don't even think about it. Your "legal assistant" won't help you, but he'll gladly write a letter for you.

Besides, even if you signed up today, if the crime was committed prior, the plan won't cover you.

In my city, you don't go to jail unless there are other outstanding warrants against you.. You get arrested, processed, You do get a citation, pay a fine, and the worst part is, your name gets published in the newspaper.
So, anyone who reads the paper will know you;ve been busted.
