If it matters, this is in the state of Idaho. I think it's 14, but I'm not positive. I'm having trouble finding it.

18. Once a child is a legal adult, they can decide and nobody can overrule that decision.

Before that, the decision is ultimately up to the courts. However, the older the child is, the more likely the court will listen to the child's wishes in the matter.

I'm pretty sure that in most states, it's up the judge if the parents can't decide without assistance. Hopefully the parents will listen to the wishes of the child, no matter how old he or she is, and certainly if a judge decides, the judge would take the child's wishes into account.
