80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Many, upon asking themselves, answer this most important of questions with an inspirational statement or two that has applied to their own good and bad experiences in life. While many of these sayings like "be happy", "try your hardest", "never be discouraged" and so forth are ways to help make life more meaningful, they will still leave the question of life nagging indefinitely. As many words as one can say will never bring closure to the question, for the answer is not a logical conclusion that one can share with others.
The "answer" to the meaning of life can only be found within oneself, appearing through the experience of realizing the connection of the core of what makes your being with that of the universe. If you truly want to reach this understanding, you must be willing to disregard all that has come between the pure essence of your existence and the person you have become to function in the world. The door to this journey has been left closed by many more than have opened it, for the idea of making changes and seeing the world in new ways is frightening for those who have made themselves comfortable in their place. When these people are asked your question they will give you a quick and unsatisfying answer.
Try to isolate the feeling that led you to ask your question in the first place and discover where it came from. Only you can find your own way to the one answer.

The meaning of life is within the circle.
look at water, where does it start and end? it's on land goes up threw the air and comes down as rain, snow or hail.
Life, we are born, we eat, poop, drink, pee, make babies die and go back into the ground to nourish the earth. the ground creatures such a a bug takes what it needs, and a bird will eat the bug and a so on and so on.
A deer eats apples off the apple tree and the seeds come out in it's poop, which in turn helps the next tree to sprout.
A tree gives us oxygen and we give it (I can't recall what it's called my room mate is distracting me sorry)
These things are all part of the circle. Thus the meaning of life is within the circle.

I think the answer is "to care." It doesn't matter what you care about. There is no right or wrong thing to care about, as long as the purpose is not to harm. One day, you can care about yourself; the next you could care about someone or something else. It's all equally fine. Obviously, the beings in most trouble deserve the most of our cares, but many of us may not be ready or competent to help. There is a saying that we do great things with baby steps. It doesn't matter if we do a great thing in life or not. The little caring we do here and there makes a difference. It's the little things that matter.
Even when one is helpless or incompetent, to be helped by others can be a wonderful thing for the helper, too. In other words, it is equally nice to receive as it is to give. (Life is circular and there are no boundaries.) For instance, do disabled people contribute to society? If nothing, they make those around them better people. So that itself is meaningful.
Every matter (including people) matters, and every thing or being is sacred. So it is our job to care about as many things as our body, mind and soul allow us. It's okay to rest, too.

The Buddhist says that it is to be Buddha which means awakened one. Perhaps the meaning is to learn about ourselves and the world we live in.
First one that answers, "42," gets 12 points subtracted.

well, if you're religious and belive that there's an afterlife, you gotta work hard toward that goal, the desire to go to heaven, you read the holy book, you obey the commandments. but if you don't believe that there's an afterlife, when we're dead we're no longer live, live this life to your fullest. life is all about learning and enjoy the process of it.

It varies from person to person. It is your life, Each and every life has a unique meaning. There is no one meaning to life, it is what you say it is, and nobody can change that.
