Choose piano. It will help you learn to read sheet music and learn music theory. Many instruments today teach only tabs.

It all depends upon what you like and what is the most fun for you. Since you are a beginner in music I wouldn't recommend bass guitar. Then you have to deal with a whole different clef of notes (you may or may not understand what clef means). I play guitar myself and love it. I'm not to serious about it, I just mess around, but its fun. You mentioned you are a little strained financially. Guitar would definately be the cheapest option. I'm not sure how easy it would be to learn about music on the guitar. I personally learned music on trumpet so thats a little different. Drums would be fun to play, but you wouldn't learn notes just rhythms. You might not be able to afford a piano, but maybe a keyboard. Personally I think keyboards are more fun because you can change their sounds. This would probably be the easiest to learn music on.

Just remember pick whichever instrument seems the most fun to you because that is all that matters. Hope I helped.

Bass is the easiest to learn quickly, but some people get bored with it quickly because most bands like the bass lines to be simple and clean.

Drums are good because you can learn the basics quickly, but you keep learning and using new techniques for years.

Guitar has that advantage that you can learn to play chords well enough to function in a band fairly quickly and continue learning lead techniques until you are ready to begin taking lead parts as well.

Piano is awesome in that when you get good, your possibilities are limitless with all the settings on the many excellent electronic keyboards, but it also takes longer to learn enough to function in a band.

You can't go wrong with any of them. One side note: good drummers are always in demand, and for some reason, so are bass players.

If you are looking to learn to read music (notes and all), and want versatility learn the piano. Drums also have a wide range of style versatility and just look fun to play but you obviously can't play actually tunes on a drum set or snare.

If you want to be in a band later on and/or write your own music, then maybe guitar would be best.

Or go to a music store and maybe test them all out and just see which you feel best suits you.

Good luck. Music is awesome!

ELECTRIC GUITAR (or acoustic, better to learn on). You can get electric guitar packages from $100-$200 on musicians friend dot com, and acoustic guitars starting at less than $100. Also, the tabs (music sheets) for guitar are easy to read, just search it on Google or something. But if you are deciding soon, order an acoustic soon, musician's friend sale ends Thursday.

As a guitarist, if I had it to do over, I would choose keyboards. Since many instruments are based on the piano, I think that keyboards teach more about theory. Also if you choose to make music a career, good keyboard players are harder to find than good guitarists. Just my humble opinion folks.

I think piano is good for beginners. Although I personally think flutes are the best.
