A Barrister is a consultant lawyer who specialises in part of the law e.g. Divorce, Crime and pleads the case for his client. A Judge rules over the case and gives the verdict and passes sentence in the case once it has been pleaded in court or if it is trail by jury he listens to what the jury.s findings are in the case and passes sentence. A solicitor acts only in the lower Courts and the Barrister pleads in the Higher Courts of Justice.

a barrister or an advocate is a type of lawyer, who is entitled to appear before the superior courts of that jurisdiction.
a judge on the other hand, presides over a case hearing both sides, then applying the law to that particular case, and determining who is lying giving a judgment. However, the duties of the judge differs if it is in civil or criminal.

scouserich and rollingpin are correct.
A judge presides over the proceedings.
A barrister represents one party in the proceedings. In some counties, the legal advocate (barrister) is distinct from the legal adviser (solicitor). In the US, the same person (attorney) both gives legal advice and represents parties in court.
