Yes I'm an emotionally tough person, I have three disabilities that impact my quality of life and how I interact with my children. I have has a number of close calls with death due to medical issues through out my life, I'm a single parent because my oldest daughter's father is dead and the youngest has a drug and alchol addicted father who can't take care of himself much less a child. All of my children have various degrees of learning disabilities the youngest one has the most serious and needed the most help. I live in NYC not the easiest city in the world to live in and hard to get what you need for special needs children. What has made me strong is the thought that I was put on this earth for a reason and until I'm really sure that I"ve accomplished what I was put here to do I'm not going anywhere and I'll be darned if life is going to make things even more difficult. I had my first operation at 4 months of age and I've had several since than most of them before 18. I decided than that my way of dealing with it was to tell my self that each minute that goes by is one less minute that I have to deal with that particular issue. That has really gotten me through some tough moments and through a lot of pain.

I have been through A LOT. When new people really get to know me and my history, they usually gasp at why i'm not in a mental ward! But, early on, I developed a wall that carefuly guards my feelings. The wall is an attitude I have that nothing much matters in this world more than your peace of mind. If you can just accept what life sends your way and make the best of it, it can only get better. Whining about your hard knocks only brings more negative energy your way. Have you noticed that? I sure have. Stay positive, even in the worst situations, a solution will present itself. Death, debt, disease, divorse all happen to people everywhere, why would you think you can escape it all? Something bad has to happen for something good and the other way around. BALANCE is the key. Mental balance. Well, thats what helps me survive this wacky life of mine. Good luck.

It's funny that I should read this today as I was just discussing this with a coworker. I wish there was some way to develop the characteristics (or at least fake) being emotionally strong. On the right day, the littlest thing can make me break down. On the other hand, I do feel that I handle the situations that arise very well. But not with out the emotions that come with...

In the military, I had to do things that should not be told on this service.
Then with my work, traveling to Mongolia, Central America, and Belieze there have been situations where I have had to walk away from people that were suffering and in such deplorable surroundings that it tore my soul appart. I have seen such things that would make a grown man fall helpless that this should take place in our world today...
I have dealt with these things and some that I cannot say, and still slept well, and function in a scocity that largely ignores that it even happens.
Yet earlier this year my fiance told me that she no longer wanted to marry me. We had been together for over a year. Just a few days later she was with another bloke. I lost my noodle. For months I can't sleep, I have trouble eatting...
I thought I was strong. I guess we all have our weaknesses.

I don't know, I guess I am still young to know it, because I didn't go threw big and tough things. The one "big" problem I had, it seemed to me that I am really strong because every one counted on me to be their shoulder to cry on and I was, but then after the things settled down, when every one was OK, then I was the one who wasn't alright, who has changed during those 2 years of listening and being there for other people, the one who is suffering now.
When it comes to smaller problems I am not that tough, but I don't show it to other people, especially not to people with whom I am that close...

The long and winding road teaches a lot in life and leaves great lessons in life...therefore you become equip with better knowledge, understanding and strength to deal with almost everything that happens in the universe. It also helps to keep in mind that "THIS IS LIFE". either you lead it or life itself takes charge. YOU CHOOSE.
