HVAC tech stated he found a leak at the evaporator coil and I need to have air handler replaced. Do I need to replace the air handler or is their a less expensive option out there?
How much is the average indoor AH going to cost?

It depends on the condition of your evaporator coil. If the evaporator is relatively new, the leak might be repairable, but they are very difficult, and labor will cost more than the replacement of the coil is worth. You should ask for three quotes: repair the leaking coil, replace the coil and coil cabinet only, and replace the air handler. Not knowing more about this specific instance, It is difficult to say why the tech wants to replace the air handler.

It depends. In layman terms he has to remove the freon from the system. He can usually pump the system down and keep the majority of the freon in the condenser ( the outside unit ) and patch the leak with silflux. You didn't specify how old the system is or the condition of the air handler. I used to repair a leak to save the home owner money. To replace it depends on the make and size of the unit. I'm a retired ac/ refrigeration mechanic and I hope that I was able to shed a little light on your problem..good luck

Get a second opinion from another company. See what they say if you're afraid you're getting ripped off.
