I recently borrowed America: The Last Best Hope from the library. It is written by William J. Bennett. It is a huge book and being history, it is not a quick read. I returned it to the library with the intention of buying my own copy. I would owe a ton of fees if I kept it till I finished it. I only read about 50 pages, but it was extremely interesting. Very detailed; not just common history.

I loved The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and Let the Trumpet Sound (a biography of Martin Luther KIng) by Stephen Oates. Centennial, the book cited by another answerer was written by James Michener, and I agree, it's a great read.

Try "Dolley" by Rita Mae Brown. It's a fictionalized bio of Dolley Madison, but the author researched it for years to get it as authentic as possible.
