Ctrl-Alt-Del to open Task Manager. Click Performance Tab to check available memory. Click Processes Tab to check what are using a lot of memory. If they are not system processes, you coul opt to end them or even disable them in "Run msconfig".
If you just have 256-512Mb RAM and sharing it with integrated graphics, your RAM could easily be used up. Processes that tend to use lots of RAM are the browser, Norton AV, Limewire, Multimedia launcher, etc.
Add more RAM, they are pretty cheap these days.

On mac, there is no real way, just if your co mputer is slow then you don't have enough memory (RAM).
ON windows you can press Ctrl+ALt+Delete. If a window with lots of buttons pops up, click task manager. if it doesn't skip the step. Then, on the performance tab in task manager, look at the second (bottom) chart and if the line is very high, then you may need more memory. if it's low or medium, you have enough.

Right click you clock at the right hand bottom. Then select "Task Manager". Then choose "Performance". It will tell you how much memory you are using and how much is available.
