The 383 with the 3.800 crankshaft will give you gobs of torque at the bottom of the rpm range right where you want it for a stoplight street fighter. Particularly when mated to the newest Chevrolet Vortec cast iron cylinder heads. Those two little baby's are worth 50 hp. out of the box.

To paraphrase an old saying. "There is no substitute for cubic inches" The 383 is basically the 400 crankshaft which is .25" greater stroke and a .060 over bore on the cylinders. While, yes, you gain HP, the biggest gain you will feel is low end torque. You also need a 400 vibration dampner and flywheel/flex plate. Now, the above is the basics..but from there, the sky is the limit on what you can do or afford.
Good Luck
At the risk of talking about another make..but did the stroker conversion on my Jeep 4 liter and ON DYNO gained 50% more HP, 61% more torque and kept the same gas mileage..if I keep my foot out of it..OK OK,,I put Chevrolet 1.6 and 2.02 valves in it...That is probably what made it work!! Ha Ha
